Recommitting to Fashion
I have nothing to wear.
I am thirty-seven; and, I think I’m in a crisis: who am I? I feel myself in flux trying to figure it out, grasping at all these solutions, trying to land on an identity. I rationalize in my mind all the reasons I’m unsatisfied with myself: “It’s because you work from home and you’re in a rut.”, “It’s because you don’t have a child and raising a child brings on a different level of maturity and womanhood.”, “It’s because you dress the same as you did in your twenties.”, “It’s because you don’t get dressed at all! You’re a slob.” It’s true that since I began working from home four years ago, coupled with the stress of the pandemic, I have given up on dressing myself. It’s a good day when I put on pants instead of lounging in my pajamas all day.
What can I do?
The obvious answer is to buy a new wardrobe!
‘What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.’
We know dressing well for ourselves makes a difference in how we view ourselves. ‘When we dress up, we walk taller – and that change in our posture has a massive effect psychologically on our brains,’ says Dr. Audrey Tang, psychologist and member of the British Psychological Society. Karen J. Pine, professor at University of Hertfordshire (UK) writes in her book Mind What You Wear: The Psychology of Fashion, ‘we cannot help but adopt some of the characteristics associated with [an article of clothing], even if we are unaware of it.’
Put on a chic dress, become a sophisticated woman who claims everything and anything she wants from the Universe! With confidence comes other life goals. Never give up on yourself or your dreams.
The Late Thirties Wardrobe
Here are some things I’m adding to my cart to transition my wardrobe into this stage of life. It seems I can’t abandon my love for color so I’m opting for refined and luxurious materials in flattering silhouettes, and I’m investing in statement jewelry that’s designed to last. Instead of Zara denim, I’m upgrading to tailored trousers; instead of run-out-the-door Birkenstocks, I’m choosing classic kitten mules. The hallmark of a good piece you’re considering investing in is how often you think you’ll wear it. I’ve chosen all of these knowing they can be dressed up or down. When I look at these colors and materials, I feel it speaks volumes in terms of what I should see in our home: Understated and comfortable elegance.
