Guestroom drms

We’re continuing the work on Mother’s house: the guest room she deemed “only for you and Jason!”

In keeping with the transitional decor of the living room and kitchen, I chose modern products to incorporate with antiques.

I wanted the space to feel like me but also work within her home. We chose a new platform velvet bed, vintage bench (which will be reupholstered in custom fabric), repurposing my old nightstands, vintage art (auction), and rattan textures (in the rug).

The most important thing we did was paint! It took me a year to convince Mom that her all grey house needs a new paint job. I hate grey so much. It’s such a boring, depressing color that clashes with everything (IMO). Since she gave me full control over the GR, I brightened it up with a creamy white. Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17 to satisfy us both, white and grey lovers. In the morning, the room has a hint of grey, but by afternoon and evening (when J and I would most likely be in the space), it will be the appropriate color. I admit I wish we sampled 100s of shades (we chose 5) to get the exact right one, but time and budget demanded a choice.

Both Mom and I both love female nudes. I have been collecting nude mid-century paintings for a few years. When I saw the Blue Woman with Plant at online auction I sat by the computer all day to bid. And we won! The smaller nude is one I’ve had in my collection for years and never framed properly. Now she will have a permanent home. Hope J doesn’t mind so many women in his sleeping space!

Mother inherited a full suite of this carved drawer pull walnut furniture from her boyfriend’s mother after her passing. Instead of buying a new dresser that we really don’t need as guests, I made sure the colors and styles would complement the dresser.

We’re installing the room and choosing fabrics in November when all the pieces are due for arrival. I’m so excited to see it all come together!
